About Us

What is NAMI?

NAMI is a volunteer, nonprofit, self-help organization offering support, education and information to the family and friends of persons with mental illness. NAMI-Memphis is made up of people who understand how it feels to love someone who has a severe mental illness or brain disorder.

What does NAMI do?

NAMI provides classes to help families cope with the effects of mental illness, plus advocacy in areas such as housing, insurance coverage and health services. At the state and federal levels, NAMI advocates for fair and nondiscriminatory laws, and works to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental illness and brain disorders.

Supported in part by a grant from the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, NAMI-Memphis is a part of the national support and advocacy group, National Alliance on Mental Illness. With more than 220,000 members and affiliate groups in all 50 states, NAMI is the country’s largest organization dedicated to improving the lives of persons affected by serious mental illness.
