For 25 years, the mission of NAMI Memphis has been to improve the quality of life for persons with severe and persistent mental illnesses and for their families/caregivers, mental health providers, police officers, and the general public through EDUCATION, SUPPORT, RESEARCH, and ADVOCACY. To achieve this mission we work toward the following goals:
Education
- Free courses are offered to family members to empower them to be knowledgeable caregivers.
- We work collaboratively with mental health care professionals and facilities to ensure a high quality of care for mental health consumers.
- Anti-Stigma campaigns to reduce stigma and discrimination are targeted toward the general public, churches, politicians, and various organizational and civic groups via the media and through speaking engagements/presentations.
Support
- We provide comfort, guidance, and education through support groups for families/caregivers and mental health consumers.
- We increase opportunities for low-stress employment and training, income maintenance, social networks, medical and rehabilitation services, assertive case management, and effective coordination of these services.
- We also support improved hospital and treatment facilities as part of the same range of services.
Research
- We promote on-going research into the physiological, biochemical, genetic, and neurological causes along with the promotion of treatment and prevention of serious brain disorders.
Advocacy
- We proactively pursue actions at the local, state, and federal levels to ensure adequate funding, research, support, and an improved mental healthcare delivery system is a reality for individuals suffering from severe mental illnesses and their caregivers/families
